Rudderless (2025)
in collaboration with Melissa O'Rourke
Rudderless is an experiment in process and possibility. Combining video and theatre, Pryor and O’Rourke play with Proto-Renaissance artworks of women at sea to understand how inherited cultural motifs and patterns of movement persist to shape personal and political realities.
Giotto’s 1320s fresco of Mary Magdalene’s Voyage to Marseille is the focus of this exhibition. O’Rourke and Pryor’s sculpture, installation and video works are artistic interventions into Giotto’s folkloric fourteenth century work as a way of testing the persistence of the image in a wholly different time and place.
Rudderless is about the power of the image – its colour, form, perspective and, above all, residual affect.
The first iteration of Rudderless appeared in an exhibition of the same name at Newstead Arts Hub, 5–14 April 2025, as part of the Castlemaine Fringe Festival in Victoria, Australia. View the catalogue, including essay by Rebekah Pryor here.
